Travel Diary: Livingston + Rio Dulce

The Stela 9 crew was off on another adventure last week! We headed to the lush caribbean side of Guatemala to Livingston and Rio Dulce to shoot an upcoming look book for 2015 >>Welcome to the Jungle.<<  This was my first time adventuring to the caribbean side of Central America, so I was really eager to experience it! We ventured to Puerto Barrios via bus from Guatemala City, after a 6+ hour bus ride we were all relieved to arrive and be welcomed with sunny skies! From Puerto Barrios, we took a 45 minute “lancha” boat to Livingston, a colorful caribbean town full of little shops, seafood restaurants and fishing boats. The colorful town and swaying palms trees were a perfect setting for shooting parts of our ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ collection.

After exploring Livingston we took another lancha to Rio Dulce (sweet river.) This is one of the most magically green places I have ever been. We were literally in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by lush green mountains and endless tropical plants and flowers. This was beyond the ideal location to shoot our collection, our bright colorful bags popped against the lush greenery. Lush green trees and plants reflect off the green tinted river, making a truly magical wonderland. Along Rio Dulce are local homes, hotels, hostels and of course greenery and wild life.

Rio Dulce would be a very interesting place to live because the only way back to the mainland of Guatemala is via boat. Just think of how you quickly run to the store for food, gas, personal necessities or beer – that does not happen here! You have to be prepared in the jungle and plan what you need or you’ll be paddling a long way for a cold cereveza. The hotel we stayed at in Rio Dulce was pretty remote and rustic – think bug nets over the beds, no wifi, and lights powered by the sun! It is nice to take a step back from reality and take in the raw beauty that mother earth has to offer, all while getting amazing shots in the jungle for our upcoming collection! Stay tuned for behind the scenes of Stela 9 on location as a I leave you dreaming of a tropical paradise!
