Semana Santa

Antigua, Guatemala is one of the most popular destinations in Latin America during Semana Santa (Holy Week) because of its deep-rooted religious traditions and its cultural and historical richness. The beauty that comes alive on the cobble stone streets is breathtaking. Processions begin in town on every Sunday at the start of Lent. During ‘Semana Santa’ there are processions everyday, multiple times a day. Locals decorate the streets with ‘Las Alfombras’ – carpets of sawdust, flowers, pine and fruits are one of the most important features of the celebrations of Semana Santa in Antigua.  The brightly covered carpets make the already colorful streets of Antigua even more beautiful during this special time of the year. The processions walk through the streets that are decorated with the rugs- followers are adorned in purple gowns, pounding drums, holding lanterns full of incense and carrying figures and statues of their savior. It is a very spiritual experience to be able to witness the faith and loyalty of the people of Guatemala during Semana Santa and to be able to capture the beauty of ‘Las Alfombras.’
